Physical double stars should go in the subcategory Binary stars. If a double star is known to have an optical component, or if it is not known to be physical, place it here.

Many stars have optical companions, and the set of criteria for what constitutes an optical double star is not clear-cut. It is suggested that editors determine whether or not stars should be added to this category by consulting the Washington Double Star Catalog or a similar authoritative catalog of double and multiple stars.
